Wall of Beds
Let's workshop this poem, set to “The Best Things in Life Are Free” (by Janet Jackson and Luther Vandross), about preteen romantic/dehumanizing fantasies!
Wall of Beds Only a few times did I try counting sheep as a boy. My ritual was to pluck a lady from the storage wall across from my floor-blanket bed—a honeycomb indefinite in spread, countless astral bunks linked to no discernable end (my moldy ceiling no more in this dreamscape). A few were classmates, yes— perhaps a few family friends. But most of those awaiting my half-sleep call were stars of the day. One was the brunette from the show Hey Dude! The blonde, rarely brought down, had a spot too. Tootie, even Jo, from The Facts of Life were there. Full House’s Aunt Becky. Amber from Mo’ Money. Eyes closed, I would guide the night’s selection by hand to my nonbed. Pecking the pillow in truth, swearing in whisper she was my favorite in truth, I would confess love. How could it not be in truth?
